Re-entry permit (before leaving Korea)

재입국허가
🟢 Easy

₩30,000 · Same day (online)

💻 HiKorea online
Documents:
  • ARC
  • Valid visa
  • HiKorea account

Most ARC holders get automatic re-entry within the permit period — but confirm on HiKorea before a trip, especially for stays abroad over the limit, or you can lose your status.

Address change report

체류지 변경신고
🟢 Easy

No fee / varies · Same day

🔁 Online or office
Documents:
  • ARC
  • Proof of new address (lease / 전입신고)

Report a move within 14 days — at the 출입국 office, online via HiKorea, or bundled with 전입신고 at the 주민센터 (see /housing-lease). Free but mandatory; a stale address can freeze services.

ARC re-issue (lost / damaged / renewed)

외국인등록증 재발급
🟢 Easy

₩30,000 · 2–4 weeks

🔁 Online or office
Documents:
  • 통합신청서
  • Passport
  • Passport photo
  • Police report (if lost)
  • Fee ₩30,000

For a lost, damaged, or expiring-photo ARC. Report a lost card promptly — it's an ID document. Book the office slot on HiKorea.

Departure / cancel registration

출국 / 등록 말소
🟢 Easy

No fee / varies · Same day

🔁 Online or office
Documents:
  • ARC (surrendered on final departure)
  • Passport

When leaving Korea for good, settle any NHIS/tax/fines and surrender the ARC at the airport. Skipping this can leave loose ends (NHIS bills, re-entry issues) for a future visit.

First ARC issuance (alien registration)

외국인등록 (체류증 최초 발급)
🟡 Medium

₩30,000 · 2–6 weeks (card mailed)

🏛 출입국 office
Documents:
  • Passport + visa
  • Application form (통합신청서)
  • Passport photo
  • Proof of address
  • Fee (₩30,000) in 수입인지 / card

Required within 90 days of arrival for long-stay visas. Book a 출입국 office slot on HiKorea first. The ARC is the key to everything else (bank, phone, NHIS).

Extension of stay (visa/ARC renewal)

체류기간 연장
🟡 Medium

₩60,000 · 1–4 weeks

🔁 Online or office
Documents:
  • 통합신청서 (Integrated Application Form)
  • Passport + ARC (+ photocopies)
  • Visa-specific proof (enrollment / contract / income)
  • Proof of address / lease
  • Fee ₩60,000 (F-6: ₩30,000)

Apply from 4 months before expiry; do it 1–2 months ahead. Many visas (D-2, E-2) extend fully online via HiKorea; some (F-2-7) are in-person only. Don't let it lapse — see overstay.

Change of visa status

체류자격 변경
🔴 Hard

₩130,000 · 2–4 weeks

🔁 Online or office
Documents:
  • 통합신청서
  • Passport + ARC
  • Documents for the NEW visa type (job offer, marriage cert, admission…)
  • Sometimes criminal-record / health check
  • Fee ~₩130,000

Switching visa type (e.g. D-2 → E-7, D-10 → E-7, → F-2/F-6) is the hardest category — requirements vary a lot. Worth consulting a 행정사 (admin lawyer) for complex changes.

Overstay / voluntary report

불법체류 / 자진신고
🔴 Hard

₩100,000 · Immediate (at departure/office)

🏛 출입국 office
Documents:
  • Passport
  • Any ARC
  • Means to pay the fine before departure

Even 1 day over is a violation. Fines run ~₩100,000/day up to ₩3,000,000 (<1 year) and MUST be paid before you leave — unpaid = delayed departure / deportation / re-entry ban. Voluntarily reporting mitigates the penalty; don't just flee.

Extend before expiry — 5 steps

Start early — slots fill up and lapsing into overstay is costly.

  1. 1

Check your expiry date early · 체류만료일 확인

Find the "until" date on your ARC. You can apply to extend from 4 months before it; aim to start 1–2 months ahead. Set a reminder — lapsing into overstay is costly + visa-status-threatening.

  2. 2

Gather the right documents · 서류 준비

Download the 통합신청서 (Integrated Application Form) from HiKorea + your visa-specific proof (D-2: enrollment + transcript; E-2: contract + school + housing + withholding receipt). Bring passport + ARC + photocopies.

  3. 3

Book a HiKorea slot (or apply online) · HiKorea 예약

At hikorea.go.kr: many extensions submit + upload fully online. If your visa needs an in-person visit, RESERVE a 출입국 office slot first — walk-ins are usually refused and slots fill fast, so book early.

  4. 4

Submit + pay the fee · 신청 + 수수료

Submit online or at the office. The extension fee is ₩60,000 (F-6: ₩30,000), paid by 수입인지 (revenue stamp) or card. Keep the receipt + application number to track status.

  5. 5

Track + collect · 결과 확인

Track on HiKorea (1–4 weeks). Online extensions update your record; a new ARC card (if issued) is mailed. Don't leave Korea until the extension is confirmed unless you hold a valid re-entry permit.

Tips — slots, timing, overstay

  • Book HiKorea slots WAY earlyOffice reservation slots on hikorea.go.kr fill up fast (sometimes weeks out, especially in university towns at semester change). Book the moment your 4-month window opens — don't wait until the last minute.
  • The 4-month / 1–2-month windowYou can extend from 4 months before expiry; apply at least 1–2 months ahead to absorb processing + slot delays. Cutting it close risks an accidental overstay.
  • Overstay = ₩100k/day + re-entry banEven one day over is illegal. Fines reach ~₩100,000/day (up to ₩3M under a year) and must be paid before departure; serious overstay triggers a re-entry ban. If you slip, VOLUNTARILY report — it mitigates penalties.
  • Some visas are in-person onlyMany extensions (D-2, E-2) go fully online via HiKorea, but certain statuses (e.g. F-2-7) require an office visit. Check your visa type on HiKorea before assuming you can do it from home.
  • Get a re-entry permit before leavingConfirm your re-entry status on HiKorea before any trip abroad. Leaving without valid re-entry (or overstaying the permit window) can cancel your residence status.
  • Call 1345 for English helpThe Immigration Contact Center (1345) offers multilingual help on visa rules, documents, and HiKorea. Use it before a wasted office trip — requirements differ by visa type + office.
  • Report address moves in 14 daysChanged your address? Report it within 14 days (HiKorea, office, or bundled with 전입신고 at the 주민센터). Immigration, bank, and delivery all key off it — see /housing-lease + /banking-arc.
  • Complex change? Use a 행정사For visa-type changes (D-10→E-7, →F-2/F-6) the rules are dense + unforgiving. A licensed 행정사 (administrative scrivener) is worth the fee to avoid a rejection that costs you weeks.
