No-branch convenience, but the app is Korean-only and sign-up needs ARC + a KR-carrier 본인인증 — a real wall for many foreigners. Easiest after you already have an ARC + KR number.

Toss Bank

📱 Internet bank
EN: minimalOnline openARC for full
Best for

Opening an account — 5 steps

  1. 1

    Gather documents · 서류 준비

Bring your ARC (외국인등록증) + original passport. A Korean phone number is needed for OTP/online banking — set one up first (see /kakao-t-setup for eSIM options). Some banks add a proof-of-address or 재직증명서 (employment proof).

  2. 2

Pick a foreigner-friendly branch · 외국인 지원 지점

Go in person — most full accounts can't be opened online by foreigners. Choose a KEB Hana / Shinhan international branch or a city branch with English staff. Mornings are quietest.

  3. 3

Open the account · 계좌 개설

Tell them you want a 입출금통장 (checking/savings account) + a debit/check card (체크카드). Short-stay visitors may only get a passport-only basic account with daily transfer limits; an ARC unlocks full features.

  4. 4

Set up mobile + internet banking · 모바일/인터넷뱅킹

Register the bank app with your KR phone for 본인인증 (identity verification). This enables transfers, bill pay, and 간편결제. The app may be Korean-only outside Hana/Shinhan — use a translation overlay.

  5. 5

Note the transfer limits · 이체 한도

New + foreigner accounts often start with low daily transfer caps (anti-fraud). Raise them later with proof of income/employment. Large transfers may need an in-branch visit at first.

National Health Insurance (NHIS / 국민건강보험)

Mandatory at 6 months — here's how it actually works.

Mandatory at 6 months

If you stay in Korea 6 months or longer, NHIS enrolment is legally required — you cannot opt out. Coverage begins on the date your ARC is issued + registered.

Employee vs regional subscriber

If a Korean employer hires you (school/hagwon/company), you're an "Employee Insured" — the employer registers you and the premium is split 50/50 with you. Everyone else (students, freelancers, dependents) is a "Regional Subscriber" paying the full premium.

Cost (2026 regional minimum)

The regional-subscriber minimum is roughly ₩158,630/month (incl. long-term-care). Employee premiums are a % of salary, halved by the employer. Premiums can be auto-paid from your bank account or card.

What it covers

NHIS makes most clinic/hospital visits cost ~30% out of pocket (see /clinic-visit), plus subsidised dental, prescriptions, and checkups. It does NOT cover everything — some procedures stay private-pay.

How to enrol / pay

Bring ARC + passport + proof of address to your local NHIS branch or a Foreign Resident Center. Set up auto-pay + e-billing. Questions: nhis.or.kr (English) or the 1577-1000 helpline.

Daily-life tips — 본인인증, 당근마켓, Wise

  • A KR phone number comes firstAlmost everything — full accounts, app 본인인증, Kakao/Toss Bank, 당근마켓 — needs a Korean mobile number. Sort that before the bank visit (see /kakao-t-setup).
  • Hana or Shinhan for EnglishFor the least friction, open at a KEB Hana or Shinhan international branch — English staff + English apps. Other banks work but lean on a translation app + a foreigner-experienced branch.
  • 본인인증 is the real wallKorean identity verification (본인인증) ties to a KR-carrier phone registered in your name. Prepaid/tourist eSIMs often fail it. A postpaid KR-number line in your own name unlocks the app-only banks + 당근마켓.
  • 당근마켓 for secondhandKarrot (당근마켓) is the daily-life secondhand + local-deals app — furniture, appliances, freebies. Sign-up needs a KR number for verification. Indispensable for furnishing a place cheaply.
  • Use Wise for money homeBank international wires are pricey + paperwork-heavy. Wise (or similar) moves money in/out at near mid-market rates with no ARC needed to receive abroad. Keep a local account for daily KRW.
  • Transfer limits start lowExpect low daily transfer caps on a new/foreigner account (fraud protection). Raise them by submitting proof of income/employment later, or do big transfers in-branch.
  • NHIS is automatic + mandatoryDon't try to skip NHIS — it's legally required at 6 months and bills accrue from your ARC date. Set up auto-pay so you don't fall behind; arrears can affect visa renewal.
  • Keep your ARC address updatedBanks + NHIS + delivery all key off your registered address. If you move, update it at immigration within 14 days — a stale address can freeze account/insurance services.
