    Find a 약국 (green cross sign), usually next to clinics. No appointment, no ID needed for OTC. Pharmacists often read English and are happy to advise.

    Describe the symptom, not a brand · 증상 설명

    Say the symptom ("headache", "stomachache", "cold") — the pharmacist picks a suitable OTC. If you want a specific drug, name the active ingredient (acetaminophen, ibuprofen, cetirizine).

    Take the recommendation (or ask generic) · 추천 받기

    They'll hand you a box or a few days' worth in a packet. Ask "제네릭 있어요?" (is there a generic?) for a cheaper local version if budget matters.

    Pay cash or card · 결제

    OTC is cheap (often ₩3,000–10,000) and not covered by insurance. Card + cash both fine. Keep the receipt for travel-insurance if it was on a prescription.

    Confirm the dosage · 복용법 확인

    Check 1일 N회 (N times/day) and 식후 30분 (30 min after meals) on the packet. Korean Tylenol is 500mg/tablet — don't double up out of habit.

  • Only 13 items at convenience storesJust the 안전상비의약품 13 (Tylenol, Pancold-A/Panpyrin cold meds, Bearse/Festal digestives, a couple of pain patches) are sold 24h at CU/GS25/7-Eleven. Everything else needs an open pharmacy.
  • Pharmacies close early + SundaysMost 약국 close ~18:00–19:00 and many shut Sundays/holidays. For nights/holidays, use the 공휴일지킴이약국 (holiday-duty pharmacy) finder or the 1339 helpline, or fall back to convenience-store basics.
  • Ask by active ingredientIf your usual brand isn't stocked, name the active ingredient (acetaminophen, ibuprofen, cetirizine, loperamide). Pharmacists match it to a Korean equivalent instantly.
  • Dosages differ from homeKorean Tylenol tablets are 500mg vs the US 325mg. Read 1회 1정 (1 tablet per dose) on the box and don't assume your home dosing.
  • Bring/translate a photo of your medsFor prescription continuity, show a photo or the box of what you take at home — pharmacists/doctors can find the Korean equivalent. Strong painkillers, ADHD meds, and some others need a Korean prescription.
  • Medicine comes in daily packetsPrescriptions are often dispensed as per-dose packets (morning/lunch/evening) rather than full boxes — convenient, but ask for the leaflet if you want to know exactly what you're taking.
  • Allergy disclosureTell the pharmacist any drug allergy ("페니실린 알레르기 있어요" = penicillin allergy). For codeine/pseudoephedrine-containing cold meds, mention pregnancy/heart conditions.
  • Hangover + 상비약 cultureHangover tonics (컨디션, 상쾌환) and basic 상비약 (first-aid kit items) are a normal convenience-store grab — no pharmacy or pharmacist needed for those.
