11:00–13:00 weekdays. Avoid 18:00–20:00 weekends — packed to immobility.

Namdaemun Market (남대문시장)

The oldest market in Korea. Kids' clothes + Korean ginseng + Galchi-jorim alley + camera shops. Sprawls across 10 blocks.

Best time
09:00–12:00. Many shops close 18:00 then food alleys take over until midnight.

Wholesale fashion at scale — Doosan Tower + Migliore + apM. Real life starts at 22:00 when designers buy fabric.

20:00–04:00. The non-tourist energy is post-midnight.

Tongin Market (통인시장)

Famous for the dosirak café — exchange ₩5,000 for brass coins and assemble your lunchbox stall-by-stall.

11:00–14:00. Dosirak counter closes 16:30 sharp.

15:00–19:00 — the late-afternoon eating window.

Korea's biggest seafood market. Pick a live fish on the ground floor → eat upstairs as sashimi or maeuntang.

Best time
11:00–14:00 or 17:00–20:00. Auctions 03:00–06:00 are tourist-friendly with English signage.

Nambu Market Night Market (남부야시장)

Friday + Saturday night only — 70+ pop-up youth-run food stalls in the old market. Best in Korea for inventive street food.

Fri + Sat 18:00–24:00. Avoid Sun–Thu (silent).

Jagalchi Market (자갈치시장)

Busan's seafood soul. "Jagalchi ajumma" sell from blue ground stalls + a new modern building behind. Live everything.

10:00–14:00. Closed 1st and 3rd Tuesdays each month.

Originally American-army can-goods market. Now nightly 30+ stalls of melt-in-mouth street food.

19:30–24:00 nightly. Add 30 min for grocery section open during day.

Seomun Market (서문시장)

One of Korea's three oldest. Textile-trade history; night market 19:00–24:00 has explosive food scene.

Best time
Day: 10:00–18:00 for fabric, mandu and gukbap. Night: 19:00–24:00 for the famous yataimura.

Survival rules

  • Cash backup
    Most stalls take Kakao Pay or card but rural / elder vendors are cash. Carry ₩30k in ₩5k / ₩10k bills.
  • Bargaining
    Polite bargaining is fine for clothing, ginseng, electronics. NOT done for food — food prices are fixed and asking insults the vendor.
  • Shoes
    Wet floors at seafood markets, oily floors near hotteok stalls. Closed-toe shoes you can hose off.
  • Allergens
    Many stalls pre-mix sauces with soy + sesame + peanut. Show your allergy card (the /translate page generates one) — most vendors will swap if asked early.
  • Eating share
    Korean market food culture is share-style — buy 1 dish, 4 people pick. Solo travelers can ask for half portions ("반인분 / baninbun") at many stalls.
  • Take-away vs eat-in
    Most stalls have 4–8 plastic stools next to the cooker — sit down to eat hotteok and bindae-tteok hot. Take-away in a paper sleeve cools fast.
  • Hours
    Most markets shut down by 19:00 — except the explicitly-labeled "night market" (야시장) ones, which start 18:00 and run to midnight.
