🟡 Doable

30,00055,000 · lock-in: varies (often annual)

Refund risk: mediumCancel: medium
Best for
Cheap, no-frills lifting on a flexible schedule
Highlights:
  • Cheapest chains (에이블, 스포애니-style)
  • 24-hour access
  • Often app/kiosk signup
  • Watch for auto-renew + annual lock-in

Great value if month-to-month, but many push annual lock-ins + auto-renew via card. Read the 약정 + 자동결제 terms; screenshot them before paying.

Annual contract (discounted)

🔴 Trap-prone

35,00070,000 · lock-in: 12 months

Refund risk: HIGHCancel: hard
Best for
Long-term residents certain they'll stay 12+ months
Highlights:
  • Cheapest monthly rate
  • 12-month lock-in
  • Discount is the bait for the lock-in
  • Mid-term cancel = penalty + regular-price recalc

The classic trap: the cheap rate requires a year commitment. If you cancel, gyms often recompute at the full (non-discount) price minus a penalty — so the refund is tiny. Despite clauses, the FTC says you CAN cancel; push back via 1372.

Month-to-month

1개월 단위
🟢 Foreigner-friendly

60,000120,000 · lock-in: none

Refund risk: lowCancel: easy
Best for
Foreigners + anyone unsure how long they'll stay
Highlights:
  • No lock-in — pay monthly
  • Walk away anytime
  • Pricier per month but zero refund risk
  • The safe default for foreigners

Costs ~30–50% more per month than an annual contract, but you avoid every cancellation trap. Strongly recommended unless you're 100% sure of a long stay.

Premium fitness club

프리미엄 피트니스
🟡 Doable

150,000400,000 · lock-in: 3–12 months

Refund risk: HIGHCancel: hard
Best for
Hotel-style facilities (pool, sauna, classes)
Highlights:
  • Spa/pool/GX classes included
  • Higher deposits + longer locks
  • Some English at upscale Gangnam/Itaewon clubs
  • Big refund disputes if you leave early

Nice facilities, but the largest sums + strictest contracts. If you might leave Korea, avoid long prepayment — or you'll be fighting for a recalculated refund.

Boutique / CrossFit / English-run

부티크 / 크로스핏
🟢 Foreigner-friendly

150,000300,000 · lock-in: monthly or class-pack

Refund risk: mediumCancel: medium
Best for
Foreigners wanting English coaching + community
Highlights:
  • Often English-speaking coaches
  • Month or class-pack pricing (more cancel-friendly)
  • Strong community for newcomers
  • Pricier per month

The most foreigner-friendly for language + vibe (CrossFit boxes, boutique studios in Itaewon/Gangnam/HBC). Usually monthly or class-packs, so cancellation is cleaner than the big chains.

PT (personal training) package

PT 패키지
🟡 Doable

500,0003,000,000 · lock-in: per session block (10/20/30+)

Refund risk: HIGHCancel: hard
Best for
Committed trainees who buy small blocks first
Highlights:
  • Sold in pricey session blocks
  • Heavy upselling at signup
  • Unused sessions ARE refundable by law (minus used + penalty)
  • Buy 10 before 30+

The biggest money sink + hardest refund fight. Trainers push 30–50 session blocks; buy the smallest block first. The "PT is non-refundable" line is a MYTH — unused sessions must be refunded (FTC), though a penalty + per-session regular price applies.

Sign safely → cancel — 6 steps

How to avoid the trap going in, and get your money out if you're stuck.

  1. 1

    Prefer month-to-month + a trial · 1개월 / 체험

Start with a 1-day or 1-week trial (1일권/체험), then a month-to-month membership. Only commit to an annual lock-in if you're certain you'll stay — the discount rarely beats the cancellation risk.

  2. 2

Read the 약정 + auto-pay terms · 약정 · 자동결제 확인

Before paying, find the lock-in (약정) length, the cancellation/refund clause (환불 규정), and any 자동결제 (auto-renew). Use a translation app; the contract is Korean-only. Screenshot/keep a copy.

  3. 3

Buy PT in small blocks · PT 소량 구매

If you want PT, buy the smallest block (e.g. 10 sessions) first — never the 30–50 the trainer pushes. You can always rebuy; you can't easily refund a big unused block without a penalty fight.

  4. 4

Know the refund math · 환불 계산

On cancellation, gyms compute the refund at the REGULAR (non-discount) price for sessions/months used + a penalty (often ~10%). Confirm the formula in writing before signing so you're not surprised.

  5. 5

Cancel in writing (내용증명 if refused) · 내용증명

To cancel, give written notice (keep proof). If they refuse a lawful refund, send a 내용증명 (certified letter) stating your FTC right to cancel a continuous-transaction contract — this alone often unblocks the refund.

  6. 6

    Escalate to 1372 / the FTC · 1372 소비자상담

Still refused? Call 1372 (Consumer Counseling Center) or file with the Korea Consumer Agency / FTC. The FTC guideline (계속거래) backs your right to cancel anytime — gyms usually settle once a complaint is filed.

Tips — your rights + the refund math

  • You CAN cancel anytime (FTC)The Fair Trade Commission's continuous-transaction (계속거래) rules give you the right to cancel a gym/PT contract at any time. A "no mid-term cancellation" clause is often legally void — don't accept "you signed, no refund".
  • The refund-math trapGyms refund unused time at the REGULAR price (not the discount you paid) + a penalty, so an annual-discount membership refunds very little mid-term. Factor this in before taking the cheap annual rate.
  • "PT is non-refundable" is a mythUnused PT sessions must be refunded by law (minus used sessions at regular price + a penalty). Don't let a trainer tell you a session block is final — but buy small blocks to minimize the fight.
  • Beware auto-renew (자동결제)App/kiosk and budget-chain memberships often auto-renew on your card. Check for 자동결제/자동연장, set a calendar reminder before renewal, and screenshot the cancellation steps at signup.
  • Month-to-month beats the discountFor most foreigners the ~30–50% premium for a no-lock-in monthly plan is cheaper than losing a prepaid annual refund. Pay monthly unless you're certain of a long stay.
  • Get everything in writingVerbal "you can freeze/cancel anytime" promises are worthless. Get the freeze (정지) + cancellation + refund terms written into the contract, and keep your copy + receipts.
  • Freezing (정지) vs cancellingGoing abroad a while? Many gyms allow a membership 정지 (freeze/hold) for travel or injury — often easier than cancelling. Ask about 정지 terms (max months, doctor's note) before you cancel outright.
  • English-friendly options existFor English coaching + cleaner contracts, try boutique studios / CrossFit boxes (often monthly or class-packs) in Itaewon, HBC, and Gangnam — fewer lock-in traps than the big discount chains.
